UNITED HOUMA NATION

The Houma settlements lie at the edge of the Gulf of Mexico at the southern extreme of the LaFourche-Terrebonne delta, the most rapidly disappearing land in the Americas. Rising sea levels and degradation to the surrounding wetlands threaten the physical settlements and cultural traditions of the Houma people.  A three-stage strategic plan, developed through multiple outreach meetings with the UHN tribal council, identifies a series of collective actions aimed at sustaining a way of life and adapting to rapidly changing environmental conditions.
