Located in one of New Orleans’ historical main streets and recently a site of renewed activity, our proposal uses the lot next door to create a hub of food production and sales, with the built-in flexibility necessary to host start-ups and grow over time. The client encourages self- and community-empowerment through the provision of resources necessary for would-be entrepreneurs to create and run successful businesses; the proposal responds by facilitating rather than prescribing, using a fluid site anchored by a shared kitchen to frame activity and catalyze latent entrepreneurial potential along the commercial corridor. Engaging the diversity and hybridity of New Orleans’ food economy, the design works across scales of operation – from the food cart, truck, or pop-up to the brick-and-mortar establishment or distributed product.
