A headquarters to support the production, exploration and exhibition of community-based art. Program includes studio spaces for resident artists, a flexible gallery space, indoor and outdoor screening rooms, a cafe, and support office space. The proposal involves the retrofitting of two existing warehouse buildings and the addition of another structure to house the program components. Siting of the new addition follows the light-industrial districts ubiquitous development pattern of pragmatic, “loose-fit” aggregation. The raised plinth replaces the engineered shell building in this case, enabling a malleable mixed-use/ form composition within a defined footprint. Open-use courts, gathering areas and circulation occupy ancillary zones between and around the structures, fully programming the extents of a normatively inactive site.
