ADAPTING NEWARK

In 2010, for the first time in sixty years, the population of the City of Newark grew.  The City added 4,000 people from the prior decade. This data suggests the Newark might be beginning to turn a corner after decades of decline. 4,000 people also happens to be the entire resident population of Downtown Newark. Downtown Newark is approximately a square mile in area and has a population of a small town.  Although the City of Newark is slowly growing, Downtown Newark – the heart of the City – is not growing and remains almost empty after business hours when office workers head home.  This study is the first in a series of sponsored investigations that look at increasing density through the leveraging of spatial peculiarities. Project is in partnership with rePLACE Urban Studio
